How much should i worry about competiton for my startup?

I plan on starting an engineering consultation company. We are going to go to builders and show them how to build more energy efficent buildings, thus making them more appealing to customers. There are other competitors out there that specalize in one or two aspects of saving on energy bills, but there are few out there (at least that i can find) who are trying to optimize the whole building project for the highest energy efficency. How much should I worry about them? How willing are companies to pay referral fees?
